Uganda
Some 36 polling stations in Kampala and Wakiso districts of Uganda resumed voting on Friday morning, after voting materials were delayed on Thursday barring voters from fulfilling their civic duties.
About 15 million Ugandans went to the polls to elect a new president and members of parliament.
580 polling stations out of a little over 28,000 have already been tallied.
And according to provisional results published by the Election Commission president, Yoweri Museveni currently leads the presidential poll with 61% of votes. His opponent, Kizza Besigye is second with over 33%.
The vote yesterday was held in a context of very high tensions between police and disgruntled voters and the late opening of polling stations.
Former Nigeria president and the Chair of the Commonwealth Observer Group Olusegun Obasanjo termed the delays as’‘inexcusable.’‘
Another highlight of the day yesterday was the arrest of the leader of the opposition, Kizza Besigye, during the voting. The arrest jeopardizes conduction of a free and fair election, according to the United States.
